De Korenbloem care home in Kortrijk

Studio Jan Vermeulen   Tom Thys Architecten

A fruit of a collaborative endeavor of the Brussels-based firms Studio Jan Vermeulen and Tom Thys Architecten, this assisted-living facility for dementia patients is located on the outskirts of the Belgian city of Kortrijk, in the province of West Flanders. An abandoned historic villa was repurposed and extended with a new building that links the neighborhood to existing parks. Effecting a visual connection with the original construction’s main entrance, the columns of the superposed exterior galleries define the front facade of the new volume. They also emphasize the verticality and form a buffer between the care home and its surroundings.
