‘Soft Skin’ Membrane

Lubna Alayeli, Nina Jotanovic, Ceren Temel, and Farah Alayeli are a team of students at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) that has developed the ‘Soft Skin’ project. Inquiring into the architectural possibilities of structures filled with air, this ‘skin’ is made of a series of thin layers of flexible silicone and elastic fabric forming ‘inflatable ‘cells.’ The resulting membrane has resistance, materiality, and transparency, and is therefore apt for dealing with the vibrations and pressures imposed upon it by wind, and with the infiltration of solar light.
