University of Stuttgart builds BUGA pavilions

The Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) and the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart have collaborated in raising these two pavilions designed for the Bundesgartenschau (BUGA), the horticulture show held every two years in Germany. This year’s venue is the city of Heilbronn and the exhibition ends on 6 October.

Based on many years of biomimetic research applied to architecture, the pavilions were erected with a combination of computational design and robotized construction.

The inspiration for the BUGA Fiber Pavilion came from the wings of beetles, and thus has a structure of woven fiber that uses plastics strengthened by glass fibers and carbon fibers, which share the main characteristics of natural compounds. The filaments are wrapped in an ETFE membrane.

The BUGA Wood Pavilion evokes the morphology of the tests of sea urchin, with a composition fragmented into 376 hollow segments. In order to use the same amount of wood per square meter, the roof spans a total of 30 meters, with no columns.
