Antonio Cruz y Antonio Ortiz

The Spanish Association of Architecture Institutes (CSCAE) has given its Gold Medal of 2014 to Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz. This annual prize goes to individuals and institutions whose paths have done much to highlight and dignify the architectural profession, and previous winners include, among other prominent figures, masters like Félix Candela, Alejandro de la Sota, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza, Miguel Fisac, and Javier Carvajal. Both born in Seville, Antonio Ortiz (1947) and Antonio Cruz (1948) studied at the Madrid School of Architecture and set up a joint practice in their Andalusian hometown early in the 1970s. Authors of the housing evelopment on Calle María Coronel and Santa Justa Railway Station, both in Seville, of the La Peineta rack-and-field stadium in Madrid, and the Spanish Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover, they are also responsible for the renovation and enlargement of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, for which they were recently named Knights of the Royal Order of the Netherlands Lion (2014), and received as well the CSCAE’s National Architecture Award (2013).
